Purpose:
To engage, inspire and challenge pupils, equipping them with the knowledge and skills to experiment, invent and create their own works of art, craft and design. To think critically and develop a better understanding of art and design. To understand how art and design both reflect and shape history, and contribute to different cultures.

Characteristics of an Artist:
- The ability to use the correct language, for example, line, shape, pattern, colour, texture, form to talk about their own art and the art of others
- The ability to express their thoughts and ideas through art and design
- To produce art from observation, memory and imagination.
- To know about other artists and designers.
- The ability to select and use materials, processes and techniques skilfully and creatively to produce their work
- To be able to reflect on, analyse and critically evaluate their own work and that of others.

Using and Applying English and Maths within Art & Design:
English:
To use Art & Design as a stimulus for writing such as
- Descriptive writing, brochures, fact files, story boards, biographies, posters, newspaper reports.
Maths:
- Paint by numbers, spatial awareness, 3D shape modelling,
- Using different shapes to make tessellations and mosaics.
- Repeating patterns, symmetry.
- To look at artists’ work e.g. Kandinsky and encourage children to answer mathematical questions and use mathematical language to describe what they see.

Inclusion:
Teachers set high expectations for every pupil. They plan challenging work to enable all pupils to make good progress regardless of their academic ability or background. We expect all children to make good progress albeit from different starting points.
